the Fort Knox Five from DC. a combo band playing a mix of funk, hiphop, electronica, reggae, even at time jazz. most definitely influenced from the 60's funk bands.
not a new band, they started in 2003, but have only released one full album in 2008, remixed in 2009: Radio Free DC.
this song is more down tempo, catchy lounge.
apparently you can download the full album for free from their site.

and if possible ... further than Copenhagen.
i'm thinking maybe mars? he seems to be on the moon already.
you know what its like? Canada is like a date-able girl and Harper is that really annoying guy that keeps asking her out. Worse, she never really says no, so she stays sort-of friends with him ... not because she likes him really but because she knows he likes her. Harper is her safety date.
he's like the persistent type who really sort of annoys you, but not by doing anything in particular, so you'd look like a jerk if you snapped at him. but he just IS annoying! he rarely says the right thing, he's passive aggressive, and most remarkably he doesn't follow his own dreams but follows on the tails of others. And the girls, we never fully reject him and throw him away but always keep a trace of life alive, keep him hoping, just in case we need to use him for those lonely times when we need a date.
urg.
we know its not going anywhere, we don't want to date this guy, its time to de-friend him and move on.
"OTTAWA - Prime Minister Stephen Harper has done an about-face and will attend the Copenhagen climate-change meeting next month.
A spokesman said Harper decided today to attend after the American and Chinese presidents announced that they will show up. The news comes a day after Harper said he would not go to Copenhagen.
The meeting to work on a new climate-change agreement runs Dec. 6-18, but it's not clear when Harper will attend.
Canada has come under strong criticism internationally for reneging on the Kyoto climate protocol and for refusing to sign on to a new deal limiting greenhouse gases unless developing nations are included. "

I am obsessed with the dress... There is another one I saw that I might give my first born to have... I will try to post it...
But here it is, the beautiful little number she wore at the premiere of Brothers in NYC.

I came across this fun site with antique paper dolls.
some beautiful dresses especially the 1930's style, with clean feminine lines.
they definitely beat Victorian beach wear!
but...
here is the dilema, i can't decide who to fall in love with:
Romantic Gentleman? or Romantic Hero????
RG reminds me of Mr Darcy, but RH seems a bit cheeky. (RH also looks a bit like Tom Ford!)
As always, here they are in casual, semi-formal and formal!
such big decisions so early in the morning....

Shadow Casting

An interesting post from Bldgblog.
A creative duo thats investigating objects that can create multiple shadows, recognizable shadows.
"Spotted via New Scientist is an amazing new computer model that allows designers to create objects based on the multiple and highly specific shadows that those objects will cast when lit from different angles.
Seen above is one, relatively mundane example of the technology, by Niloy Mitra and Mark Pauly: three paintings by Andy Warhol are being cast from the same object. "Their computer model can calculate the object shape needed to cast up to three distinct shadows simultaneously," New Scientist explains. The designers call it "editing the shadow volume."
But what if we could do this with a glass tower in midtown Manhattan? Or if there was an elevator moving upward through an all-glass shaft, and as the lights in the lobby around it switch on and off, different—often wildly unexpected—shadows are cast within the building?
What are the architectural possibilities of multiple-shadow casting design? "

Coolio, from the 90's music scene, just came out with a new cookbook. Apparently he had a cooking show too...
"You know him as Coolio, the artist behind such mid-'90s hits as "Fantastic Voyage" and "Gangsta's Paradise." But recently he's reinvented himself as the Ghetto Gourmet, with an online cooking show and now a new cookbook, "Cookin' With Coolio," full of recipes with names such as Chicken Lettuce Blunts and Cold Shrimpin'. We spoke with him about romance in the kitchen, cooking on a budget, and why he is like Emeril Lagasse. The conversation has been edited for a family newspaper."

"The solar passive designed dollhouse features a wind turbine and a solar cell panel with electrical inverter for generating electricity, a rain barrel for collecting rain, a green fa?ade which helps control the appropriate temperature of the house, and a shade canopy that can be pulled down preventing or allowing the wind and sunlight coming through. Also, recycle bins are included in the set."
"The Green Dollhouse is designed to help children learn how to live in harmony with nature. Children will learn how appliances in the Green Dollhouse assist their daily life without damaging the environment. They will also learn how electricity can be generated from alternative natural sources such as the sun and wind."

This is hilarious... a quote from an article that tries to demonstrate why werewolves (team Jacob) are attractive than vampires (team Edward):
"[Bianca D'Arc, author of Lords of the Were] equates vampires to metrosexuals: good-looking, slightly effeminate and sophisticated. Werewolves, on the other hand, are more rugged, old-fashioned and dangerous – like military men, she says. "

Tim Burton is a totally fascinating, scary individual. I think I have to go see this.
"A fascinating review of Burton's artistic career, the exhibition focuses on his evolution as both director and concept artist for live-action and animated films, in addition to his work as an artist, illustrator, photographer and writer. Tracing Burton's creative history chronologically—from his earliest childhood drawings through his mature work in film—the survey unites over 700 examples of rarely or never-before-seen drawings, paintings, photographs, notes, storyboards, moving-image works, puppets, costumes, and other cinematic ephemera, as well as an extensive film series spanning Burton's 27-year career."
Which themes stand out most consistently?
"The dynamic, ongoing relationship between childhood and adulthood and the saving grace of creative activity seem to be his most comprehensive themes. Motifs include a creature-based notion of character, masks and armor, body modification, and the Carnivalesque."

"The distant, ice-covered world is no longer a true planet, according to a new definition of the term voted on by scientists today.
"Whoa! Pluto's dead," said astronomer Mike Brown, of the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena, as he watched a Webcast of the vote. "There are finally, officially, eight planets in the solar system."
In a move that's already generating controversy and will force textbooks to be rewritten, Pluto will now be dubbed a dwarf planet."

So this interactive Facade is located in Montreal. The project: La vitrine culturelle de Montreal.
From the Architizer website:
The permanent installation strategically located includes tracking devices and low-resolution 35,000 LED light bulbs that change shape and colour according to passersby’s movement. “The fun and interactive nature of this installation is an innovation of the Quartier des spectacles Lighting Plan, as it redefines the traditional architectural facade so as to enable passersby to make it their own by interacting with the light shapes displayed.

When cabaret meets art school...

Dr. Sketchy anti-art school was created in 2005 by Molly Crabapple in NY city.
ABOUT DR. SKETCHY'S
Extract from the website:
ABOUT DR. SKETCHY'S
How is Dr. Sketchy's different from a normal life drawing class?
In normal life classes, silent students sit in a silent room and draw a bored, oft-uninteresting model. In Dr. Sketchy's we've got scandalous performers as models. We've got ridiculous art contests (best incorporation of a woodland animal? Best imagined costume?), comedic skits good music and flashy prizes. We've got a selection of posh beverages - alcoholic and not - available to buy.
At Dr. Sketchy's, we don't care if you picked up a pad yesterday or 50 years ago. Come to drink or to draw. We're happy to have you.
drinking cocktails, drawing and scandalous performers... count me in!

the article is old, from 2006 but sums up the site well...
apparently the case is still in court.
"SAINT-ROMAIN-AU-MONT-D’OR, France (AP) — A replica of the World Trade Center ruins is the last thing you expect to find in a tranquil corner of provincial France. Yet there it is, along with a sign that reads: “The end of the world is nearing.”
This is the Abode of Chaos — art gallery extraordinaire or the local eyesore, depending on who you ask. Twisted car carcasses are heaped in the yard, and the water in the swimming pool out back is tinted a murky blood red. Portraits of Osama bin Laden and other terrorists gaze down at passers-by.
Just a few years ago, the Abode of Chaos was a charming 17th-century residence, perfectly at home on a street of well-preserved farmhouses, golden-hued stone walls and pansies in window boxes.
The Abode’s creator, eccentric entrepreneur Thierry Ehrmann, has been locked in a legal battle with the mayor’s office in this town of 1,100 outside Lyon, in central France, and the trial has made its way to France’s highest court.
The case has sparked heated debate, in court, in blogs, on petitions. Is the Abode of Chaos art? And what neighbor, no matter how open-minded, would want to wake up every morning to Ehrmann’s vision of the apocalypse?

The case has sparked heated debate, in court, in blogs, on petitions. Is the Abode of Chaos art? And what neighbor, no matter how open-minded, would want to wake up every morning to Ehrmann’s vision of the apocalypse?

We're more design than science, but this article is pretty interesting. A new ocean!
It might be millions of years before it becomes an Ocean, but I say we purchase future waterfront property right now. I hear prices are pretty cheap for politically unstable, hard to access, desertic land.

"The Godiva Chocoiste store in Harajuku, Tokyo, designed by Wonderwall, has chocolate literally melting from the walls and ceilings. They write: "Wonderwall’s intention was to add a breath of fresh air to the more traditional image Godiva instill. The shop features humorous design details such as the 'melting chocolate' ceiling combined with the primarily classical interior design."

I quite like the superimposition of the rather sterile architecture with the colourful more human-scale artifacts.
"Ilse Leenders lives and works in Rotterdam, The Netherlands. Leenders was recently awarded the 2nd Prize Conceptual Jury Vote in Viewbook’s Photostory competition for her series, Tokyo Monogatari. Of this series she says,’Tokyo Monogatari is a personal project inspired by the typical aspects of the daily contemporary life and the traditional cultural heritage of Tokyo. The atmosphere of the city is visualized by the synthesis of these different elements. The series expresses at one side the habitual rituals of the citizens of Tokyo nowadays and at the other hand the exaggeration of bodily shapes drawn in the ancient manga sketches of Hokusai, shown in the movements of the performers in Noh- and Kabuki theater and the ‘hidden’ puppeteers of Bunraku in a photographic manner’."

"James Franco, one of our hottest and most interesting young actors, joins ABC soap “General Hospital” in November for a short run.
Why? What? Franco won raves for his performance in “Milk,” awards for playing James Dean, made big bucks from “Spider-Man,” and has several big films on his release schedule.
The world is puzzling over this odd choice. One thing: he and one of the “GH” actors share a manager. But that’s not enough to push Franco onto a show that oddly mixes doctors and nurses with a low-rent “Godfather” storyline. So what gives?
Franco gives minimal explanation. He tells me, only: “It’s performance art.”
That’s it. He can’t even say why he’s chosen this soap over another. But Franco marches to a different drummer. He’s spent the last few years as a part-time academic and would be writer. He’s got a contract with Scribner’s for a book of stories. He’s in a graduate creative writing program at NYU and Columbia University. Prior to that, while he was making “Spider-Man,” he was also getting his B.A. from UCLA."
