"This is the first major museum exhibition to focus on sexual difference in the making of modern American portraiture. “Hide/Seek” considers such themes as the role of sexual difference in depicting modern America; how artists explored the fluidity of sexuality and gender; how major themes in modern art—especially abstraction—were influenced by social marginalization; and how art reflected society’s evolving and changing attitudes toward sexuality, desire, and romantic attachment."

Move: Choreographing You
On at the Southbank Center in London
Is it art or is it dance? Leave your heels at home and explore an unusual new exhibition that will really get you moving
First things first: put your bags in the cloakroom. That's not overofficiousness, just practical advice. And leave your heels at home, too. Because this is not your usual stand-and-stare, quietly-stroke-chin sort of exhibition. This one only comes to life at all if you, the viewer, get involved. On at the Southbank Center in London

Interesting work at the Moma
"This performance retrospective traces the prolific career of Marina Abramović (Yugoslav, b. 1946) with approximately fifty works spanning over four decades of her early interventions and sound pieces, video works, installations, photographs, solo performances, and collaborative performances made with Ulay (Uwe Laysiepen). In an endeavor to transmit the presence of the artist and make her historical performances accessible to a larger audience, the exhibition includes the first live re-performances of Abramović’s works by other people ever to be undertaken in a museum setting. In addition, a new, original work performed by Abramović will mark the longest duration of time that she has performed a single solo piece. (Please note: Abramović will not perform during MoMA Nights.) All performances, one of which involves viewer participation, will take place throughout the entire duration of the exhibition, starting before the Museum opens each day and continuing until after it closes, to allow visitors to experience the timelessness of the works"

From Website
RED WALL GALLERY presents
LINEAGE - SOLO SERIES 2010
Artist: Magida El-Kassis
Date: March 5th ? March 16th, 2010
Vernissage: Friday March 5th, 2010, 17:00 - 20:00
Viewing Hours: Monday-Friday, 11:00-18:00, Saturday, 10:00-15:00, Sundays and late evenings by appointment or by chance.
An exhibition of a photographic typology documenting people of "pure bred" ethnicity in order to preserve the lineage and identity of humankind.
El-Kassis explores a personal perspective into the definition of lineage through these images. She envisions these photographs serving as proof for future generations of the existence of pure indigenous ethnic groups. As populations become more integrated, an aspect of identity becomes unrecognizable, so she has begun this typology in order to help preserve the ancestry and identity of humankind.

I picked up a free magazine on Dubai (with diamond-encrusted floor tiles at 1.8M $/sqm), and between articles about Zaha and a diamond and platinum pacifier, I saw Melise's future employer. Montreal-based!!

I took a left turn at the National Gallery after viewing the wonderful Szilazi photography exhibit (I bloggued about 10/11/2009) and came upon a surprising exhibition by Lethbridge-based Artist David Hoffos.
From the pamphlet:
"Scenes from the House Dream is the culmination of 5 years of studio production [...]. Over the past 17 years, Hoffos' work has investigated the psychology behind the spectacle of visual media, old and new."
This exhibition blew me away. Difficult to explain, it truly can only be experienced to understand how he created a symbiotic interaction between model making, video, reflection and optics. It also presents "life size" art pieces.

She found the online exhibit!
It's a bit hard to navigate but the before/after are interesting. It's like a wood siding vs. vinyl expose.

Hilarious.
Kim Waldron is presenting a photography exhibition called "Triples" which questions the status of what we qualify as a "normal" relationship. She presents scenes of Ménage à Trois in an "everyday" setting.

This year's 2009 winner is Nadav Kander.
From the website:
As Kofi Annan, the Prix Pictet’s Honorary President, said, in awarding the 2008 Prix Pictet to the Canadian photographer Benoit Aquin, “It is my hope that the Prix Pictet will help to deepen understanding of the changes taking place in our world and raise public awareness about the urgency of taking preventative action. The images submitted for the Prix Pictet confront us with the scale of the threat we face and they act to inspire governments, businesses – and all of us as individuals – to step up to the challenge and support change for a sustainable world.”
