From the Architizer Website:
"Like a beacon of hope on a cold winter’s day, the announcement last week that SO-IL was the winner of the annual Young Architects Program competition to design the courtyard space at P.S.1, in Queens, came as a sign that, eventually, it would once again be warm in New York.
Not only does the design remind us of warm summer days soaking up good beats, good art and good beer, but it also confirms that architecture can be fun, and low-cost to boot!"

One of my favorite sites when I need a laugh is Overheard in NYC.
Now i've just come across Overheard at Mcgill.
a few examples:
Girl 1: Can you be gay if you’ve never had sex with anyone?
Girl 2: I don’t know…do you feel gay when you masturbate?
–Shatner
Girl #1: Wait, is the Plateau a building?
Girl #2: Or is it like a region?
-Aylmer
Guy 1 : Dude, where is the Pacific Ocean?
Guy 2: Seriously? Like, the biggest ocean in the world?
Guy 1: Yeah, I guess.
-Leacock
Prof: [looking at Girl 1] …Are you from the US?
Girl 2: She’s wearing a Roots sweater – why did you think that she was from the US?
Prof: I’m wearing no underwear. Where am I from?
- Leacock

"Dress for success" at Kiki de Monparnasse
"NOTHING is actually known about the Christian martyr who was buried near Rome on Feb. 14. There were a number of different St. Valentines; even Pope Gelasius had no idea who the guy was when he established a feast in his name in the fifth century. Historians assume that he did so as a means of whitewashing the pagan holiday Lupercalia, an ancient Roman tradition of worshiping the goat lord Pan (known as Faunus in Roman cosmology), to rid the city of evil spirits and restore fertility. A dog and a goat were usually sacrificed; salt cakes were burned by vestal virgins.
The high-end lingerie store Kiki de Montparnasse is named for the mistress of Man Ray, an artist’s model for a number of Dada guys back in the wild nineteen-teens. It’s quiet, sleek and expensive with dim, soft lighting, vintage black-and-white nude photographs and a library of erotic art and literature. They play slow, moany French lounge-pop and Portishead. The whole decadent vibe seems designed to be alluring even to the rich, uptight and squeamish who, in the past, may have shied away from the trappings of bondage because they seemed too garish and sleazy."

I've been reading reviews about this exhibit all over.
"The real van gogh: the artist and his letters" at the Royal Academy
This exhibition seems more like a biography on walls, made possible not only by his paintings but also drawings and letters (most of which he wrote to his brother).
The image we have of him being this out of control half crazy artist, complete with missing ear, but apparently for most of his life he was very meticulous and dedicated to his painting in a way what we would find surprising.
reviews here or here
his letters can also be read via paper copy for about a gagillion pounds

a barely 10 year old building built on a waterfront in a seaside community has been slated for demolition after a poll rated it as Englands most hated building.
its interesting because i've been researching how listen to communities in forming values for heritage purposes.
all the same i would hate to be that architect...
"A seaside building that won a poll as the most hated in England is to be bought by a local authority and razed.
Bournemouth borough council is to spend around £7.5m to rid the Dorset resort of the Waterfront leisure complex. Featuring dark glass and a wavy roof designed to represent the sea, the development, also known as the Imax building, caused an outcry when it was opened in 1998 owing to both its looks and the fact that it blocked a beloved view across the water to the Purbeck Hills."

patti smith just came out with a biography.
the focus is on her youth, in particular her relationship with robert Mapplethorpe.
"“Just Kids” captures a moment when Ms. Smith and Mapplethorpe were young, inseparable, perfectly bohemian and completely unknown, to the point in which a touristy couple in Washington Square Park spied them in the early autumn of 1967 and argued about whether they were worth a snapshot. The woman thought they looked like artists. The man disagreed, saying dismissively, “They’re just kids.”"

Westwood says, let them eat cake.
"Vivienne Westwood unveils homeless chic at Milan Fashion Week
Some carried bedrolls. Another emerged from his cardboard box with a sleeping bag, slung it around his neck and quickly walked away.
Several hundred fashion experts burst into rapturous applause as the cameras flashed. Dame Vivienne Westwood was presenting a menswear show at Museo della Permanente, Milan, last night in which the models were supposed to look like rough-sleepers. "
this seems to show a blatant disregard for the problem and suffering of people in need!!! ...
"Westwood conceded that she herself had no experience of being homeless. “The nearest I have come to it is going home and finding I don’t have my door key,” she said. “I mean, what a disaster that is, dying to get in your house and you can’t. And what if it wasn’t there any more?”

Interesting shape but sadly un-sensual!
"This modern structure is a first for Mexico in more ways than one. Designed by Rojkind Arquitectos, Nestlé Chocolate Museum in Toluca, Mexico, is the first chocolate museum south of the border, and also boasts a first when it comes to architectural flair. The 1,000-sq.-ft. red facade is a roadside attraction for anyone driving along the freeway. A gaping mouth reveals interiors of white, and leads into a 6,824-sq.-ft. entrance where the Mexican version of the Wonka tour begins. The design incorporates a theater, a shop, and a series of bending tunnels that lead into the adjoining chocolate factory. Interiors highlight the playful complexities visible from the “folded” origami-inspired exterior. Rojkind Arquitectos."

"WE BELIEVE: Everyone Needs Art
(limited editions × low prices) + the internet = art for everyone
As we see it, there are a lot of people out there who want to sell their art and a lot of people who'd like to buy it. They just have a hard time finding each other. The internet is the perfect place to bring those people together, and we're exactly the right people to make it happen. We're passionate about art and the internet at 20x200. We're really excited about creating a place where almost any art lover can be an art collector."

Us, 30?

"The prolonged adolescence of being 30
Two weeks in and I'm guessing most of us are already struggling with our New Year's resolutions ("lose weight," "eat less junk food"), those pesky commandments we routinely break every January.
In the course of this struggle, though, we are probably also avoiding some much bigger life goals, such as: Finish our education; secure a good job; buy a home; and, for many, find that special someone.
These goals, milestones really, felt inevitable a generation or two ago, but now seem to be increasingly difficult to achieve.
Let me do a little compare and contrast: At my age, my mother had completed her master's degree in English, was married, worked full time and had a home and two children.
I have some catching up to do,"

Some quotes from my favorite witty 19th century playwright: Oscar Wilde
"Fashion is a form of uglyness so intolerable we have to change is every six months"
"Consistency is the last refuge of the unimaginative"
"Anyone who lives within their means suffers from a lack of imagination."
"Morality, like art, means drawing a line someplace."
"There are only two kinds of people who are really fascinating: people who know absolutely everything, and people who know absolutely nothing."
"The only thing that sustains one through life is the consciousness of the immense inferiority of everybody else, and this is a feeling that I have always cultivated."
"We are all in the gutter, but some of us are looking at the stars."

reminds me of some Betty Goodwin work
"Daring and out-of-the-ordinary, artist painter Lysanne Pepin dives into fresh water to rediscover the beauty of the human body - free of weight, gravity and restrictions. In this new collection, by means of underwater filming, she captures the female figure in a state of grace, beauty, sensuality and innocence. She presents her new collection, entitled Weightlessness, to the public in the Spring of 2009.
With the artwork of the Weightlessness series, Pepin explores the organic movement and spontaneous expression of her subjects, who are themselves artists and comedians of great talent. They have accepted this invitation to share in the unique experience of being filmed in a state of total weightlessness, freedom of movement and liberty. Each one of her muses is more beautiful and inspired than the other, and they move with ease and grace in the diffuse light of the water. They evolve to the rhythms of the underwater world, dancing, swirling gently, their diaphanous dresses moving naturally around them, their hair following as if haloed diadems.
