What is love... simply a chemical addiction?

This is a more personal entry than my other ones; I seem to have met someone for which things just REALLY clic. I am scared to use the cliché of "love at first sight" (for the more realistic people like me, maybe it should be "lust at first sight"?!) but it seems like this is what people describe.
As papergirl would agree, my romantic track has not been the most stable and it has been a few years since I have had a special someone where timing, feelings, a good level of sanity and even being in the same city actually coincides. So overall, as much as I am beyond excitement at the prospect of spending time with this special new someone, I have big fears.
So putting my utter gittiness aside, I started to wonder "what is love" (and I am not talking about this cheezy song either).
So if you type "what happens when we fall in love" in your favorite web browser, you can start belieiving that the all around answer may be there... You may understanding these crazy internal sensational (hello, butterflies in the stomach anyone??!!).
The first thing that caught my eye was the site howstuffworks.com which would give me the "scientific" explanation. Here is an exerpt: "If you've ever been in love, you've probably at least considered classifying the feeling as an addiction. And guess what: You were right. As it turns out, scientists are discovering that the same chemical process that takes place with addiction takes place when we fall in love."
So the conclusion number one: I have become a closeted drug addict... Great. Is there rehab for this? :)
And then you continue your web search and fall upon old classic french songs with cute little cartoons which almost restores your faith that you are not crazy or on "special" drugs.
I guess the first public "symbol" or gesture that we are attracted to someone is holding hands or kissing. The history of the kiss may require further research but here is the definition of a kiss according to Wikipedia: "A kiss is the act of pressing one's lips against the lips or other body parts of another. Cultural connotations of kissing vary widely. A kiss may be used to express sentiments of love, passion, affection, respect, greeting, friendship, and good luck, among many others. The word came from Old English cyssan "to kiss", in turn from coss "a kiss". The act of kissing has become a common expression of affection among many cultures worldwide. Yet in certain cultures, kissing was introduced only through European settlement; prior to this, kissing was not a routine occurrence."
So on that note, I shall update the blog on my research on the act of falling in love.
But in the end, I think a little bit of my romantic faith has been re-kindle and just for that, I think that deserves a little nod on our blog.

I made these light gingerbreads this week. Quite good, not too sweet. Though the recipe says they are soft mine went crispy after they cooled down.
Soft Molasses Cookies
* 1 cup molasses
* 1/2 cup soft brown sugar
* 1/2 cup butter
* 2 tablespoons sour cream
* 1/2 cup boiling water
* 3 cups plain/all purpose flour
* 1 teaspoon ginger
* 1 teaspoon vanilla essence
* 1/2 teaspoon salt
* 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon
* 1 teaspoon baking soda
* 1/4 teaspoon baking powder
Preheat the oven to 190°C/375°F/Gas mark 5
Put the molasses and sugar in a bowl. Add the butter to boiling water and when it is melted, add to the molasses. Add the sour cream and blend. Add the other ingredients and blend well. Let the mixture stand for one hour in a cold place so it will thicken
Drop by teaspoonful onto a greased baking tray. Leave room for expansion. Use a spoon dipped in milk to flatten cookies and make them shiny. Bake for 10-15 minutes. Cool on a wire rack.

A little ways back I posted a link about the Smithsonians new exhibit Hide and Seek, a show about artists specifically portrait artists portray sexuality and gender. Seems like the US "Right" is not too happy about it:
"One month on, his dream is in tatters. Last week, after a sustained attack by opponents, including Republican House Speaker John Boehner and the Catholic League, the Smithsonian withdrew from Hide/Seek a video by the artist David Wojnarowicz, Fire in My Belly, which includes a crucifix covered in ants, symbolising the suffering of people with Aids; Wojnarowicz died of the disease in 1992. Georgia congressman Jack Kingston, railing against the gallery's depictions of "male nudity" and "Ellen DeGeneres grabbing her breasts", is calling for a congressional review of the Smithsonian's funding. Katz, who was not consulted before the artwork was pulled, is livid: "When the Smithsonian starts bowing to its censors, it abrogates its charge as our national museum."
More at the Guardian.

Beautiful inside and out?
George Henry Lewes (18 April 1817 – 28 November 1878) was an English philosopher and critic of literature and theatre. He became part of the mid-Victorian ferment of ideas which encouraged discussion of Darwinism, positivism, and religious skepticism. However, he is perhaps best known today for having openly lived with George Eliot,( pen name of Mary Anne (Mary Ann, Marian) Evans) a soul-mate whose life and writings were enriched by their friendship.
"As all Art depends on Vision, so the different kinds of Art depend on the different ways in which minds look at things. - "George Henry Lewes

"This is the first major museum exhibition to focus on sexual difference in the making of modern American portraiture. “Hide/Seek” considers such themes as the role of sexual difference in depicting modern America; how artists explored the fluidity of sexuality and gender; how major themes in modern art—especially abstraction—were influenced by social marginalization; and how art reflected society’s evolving and changing attitudes toward sexuality, desire, and romantic attachment."

8 1/2 Scenes with Sienna Miller
"
"SCENE 2
At the Hotel d'Inghilterra, just off the Via Condotti—Rome's Rodeo Drive, albeit with the Spanish Steps thrown in—I knock on Sienna Miller's door. She has occupied her modest suite for all of ten minutes, and already it looks like the bedroom of a teenage club chick who can't pick an ensemble for Saturday night. Her suitcase has apparently erupted. Streaming from it, or thrown out of it, are nude patent Burberry ankle boots; Chanel silver python flats; an ostrich boot from Louis Vuitton ("That's the perfect boot; sorry to sound so fashiony"); snakeskin platforms from Terry de Havilland; a 1920s vest worn by Vietnamese soldiers; a blue sequined V-back sweatshirt from Peter Jensen ("I quite love sequins; I think it's the drag queen in me"); an Ossie Clark dress covered in pansies ("a proper hippie dress"); a 1989 STEEL WHEELS Rolling Stones T-shirt pilfered from ex-boyfriend model/rocker Jamie Burke; gray linen overalls from Isabel Marant; a black beaded halter top ("a slutty kind of thing"); a 1920s wedding dress with an arm coming off; Vivienne Westwood vintage tops for Wolford; a Lurex granny-square vest by Wayne Rogers for Granny Takes a Knit; JET track pants; an "oversize doll dress" by an English line, PPQ; black sports shorts with a red heart on them (A. Olivieri from Euphoria, London); an orange alligator clutch from Bridget Romanek. "There's nothing that goes with anything else," Miller remarks."

Mr. Idenburg agreed that “architecture is a profession of patience,” adding, “For the first 10 years you just hope to survive.”
"IN the video, on YouTube, Madonna is seen laying the first brick at a school in Lilongwe, Malawi. But to connoisseurs of architecture, the real star of the video is the man standing next to Madonna, alongside a rendering of the 40-acre campus. He is Markus Dochantschi, the German-born, New York-based designer of what is called the Raising Malawi Academy for Girls.
For a young architect it’s hard to imagine a higher-profile project than a school backed by Madonna. And if the attention mostly goes to the pop star, Mr. Dochantschi isn’t complaining. He spent seven years working for the architect Zaha Hadid, a larger-than-life figure, learning how to stand outside the spotlight."

Just finished building a sculpture made of non-perishable foods to support the Daily Bread Food Bank of Toronto.
"IT STARTS WITH ONE CAN. TO FEED THE HUNGRY. TO LIFT THE SPIRIT. TO CHANGE THE WORLD.
Canstruction is using one can as a catalyst for change. One can to represent the building blocks of massive
sculptures. One can to prove that every act of kindness makes a difference. Since 1992, Canstruction has contributed
over 15 million of pounds of food to community food banks demonstrating that we can win the fight against hunger."

Living Rooms With a View
These photographs of residents of Lafayette Park, a residential community in Detroit designed by the architect Mies van der Rohe, were shot in the same room in each of their townhomes. The homes share design features, including a floating staircase and floor-to-ceiling windows. Dose of Chock

Sometimes a litte dose of chocolate is all we need. Something easy to bite into with crumbles nicely with tea. This chocolate crisps do the trick. They aren't the type of cookie that melt in your mouth and leave you speechless. But those aren't always good for the figure. In fact you definitly need the white chocolate glaze to sweeten them up. Half the recipe made plenty of cookies. I shaped them into bones for Halloween.
Source
Ingredients
1 cup (250 mL) salted butter
¾ cup (175 mL) brown sugar
1¾ cup (425 mL) all-purpose flour
½ cup (125 mL) cocoa
Topping:
8 oz (250 g) chopped white chocolate, melted
Get Cooking!
1. Cream butter and sugar together until light, about 5 minutes. Sift flour with cocoa.
2. Beat into butter mixture. Divide dough into four square pieces. Wrap and refrigerate for at least one hour.
3. Roll out one piece of dough on a lightly floured surface and cut into 12 squares of about 2 in (5 cm) each. Repeat with remaining pieces of dough. Arrange cookies on baking sheets lined with parchment paper. (Cookies will not spread too much, if at all, as they bake.)
4. Bake in a preheated 275°F (140°C) oven for 20 to 25 minutes. Remove from oven then, after 15 minutes, transfer to a cooling rack.
5. Melt chocolate in a 2-cup (500-mL) measuring cup. Dip cookies in the chocolate on the diagonal so that half are covered from one corner to another in white chocolate. Allow excess white chocolate to drain off and arrange cookies on rack. Refrigerate until set.

Orange Blueberry Bread

Thought its more like a coffee cake than a bread, its still quite good. Very moist and tasty.
Recipe via Eggless Baking.
2. In a medium size bowl sift together the flour, baking powder, baking soda and salt; keep it aside.
3. In a small bowl whisk together the applesauce, yogurt, orange juice and zest.
4. In a large bowl cream together the melted butter and sugar for about 5 minutes using a hand held electric mixer. (Update: Measure the butter first and then melt it. The butter and sugar doesn’t cream very much. It looks more like coarse crumbs). To this add the above wet mixture and beat well for another 2-3 minutes. The mixture will look curdled but it’s okay.
5. Now to the above add the flour and milk alternatively and beat for a couple of seconds after each addition. Add the flour in three parts and milk twice. So you would start with flour and end with flour.
6. Fold in the blueberries and nuts. If using frozen blueberries, do not thaw it.
7. Pour the batter into the prepared loaf tin and bake between 60-70 minutes or until the bread is golden brown and a toothpick inserted in the center of the bread comes out clean. Mine was done exactly at 60 minutes.
8. Transfer the pan to a cooling rack and let it cool for about an hour before you can remove the bread from the pan. I think I did not grease the bottom of the loaf pan well enough so I was able to remove the bread only after about 1 hour and 45 minutes. Cool it completely on the wire rack (preferably overnight) before cutting it into slices. I baked it at after 8 pm, so left it overnight and was able to get neat slices the next day morning.
Recipe via Eggless Baking.
Orange Blueberry Bread
Ingredients:
All Purpose Flour 1 and 1/2 cups
Baking Soda 1/4 teaspoon
Baking Powder 1 and 1/4 teaspoons
Salt 1/2 teaspoon
Butter, (measured and melted) 5 tablespoons
Granulated Sugar 1 cup
Unsweetened Applesauce 1/4 cup (dry measuring cup)
Plain Yogurt (I used fat free) 1/4 cup (dry measuring cup)
Orange Juice (freshly squeezed) 4 tablespoons
Orange Zest 1 tablespoon
Milk (I used 2%) 1/2 cup
Blueberries (fresh or frozen) 1 cup
Pecans, chopped (or nuts of your choice/optional) 1/2 cup
Yield: One loaf.Procedure:
1. Preheat oven to 350F/180C for 15 minutes. Coat well a 9×5 inch loaf pan with non-stick cooking spray on the sides and bottom.2. In a medium size bowl sift together the flour, baking powder, baking soda and salt; keep it aside.

So, the panel visited the AGO yesterday.
I can't formulate a full opinion until I know what was there before the Gehry intervention. This task is proving to be very difficult as it seems like all pictures prior to the renovation have been deleted, off of .. the internet. Yes, the whole internet seems to be void of them. (Im sure there must be some around, but its damn hard to find, its like they WANT you to forget what it was before). The only reason I'm so interested is because of a very beautiful limestone wall found in the back courtyard which suggests there was a potentially interesting historic building here there at one time.
Since my practice is all about context and narrative, I NEED to know what was there in order to formulate my thoughts. I'm not a clean slate girl. Clean slates? They don't exist .. anywhere. All building sites have baggage.
Therefore I will post pics of the AGO, from arcspace, and will defer my opinions until a later date.

Should we update our domain name?

"If possible, your domain name should be similar to any business name you have trademarked or registered. IBM, for example, owns the domain name ibm.com. What if you’re IBM Canada? Should you register ibmcanada.com or ibm.ca? Good question. Domain name registry is easy and relatively cheap. It costs about $15 a year to control a domain name, so a company like IBM Canada would want to register both if they are available."

The "unmentionable" will be happening in a few months...
Started doing a bit of research; a lot of articles on "turning 30" but not much about the next step... 3-1.
I di find that this is my last chance at a working visa in Australia... Past 30, i can't apply. Is this something worth exploring?
Not many songs talk about turning 31... Only GULP! a cowboy song by Tim McGraw.

From the website:
"The Labyrinth Arctic Gardens is a new theme park concept in Quebec. It’s a giant corn maze where the whole family can explore twists and turns, meeting intriguing and roguish characters along the way, each of whom has a story to tell and invites you to take part. Performances, puzzles and plenty of laughs await you just around the next corner… as long as you know how to get to them!"

Well last night I went to see Lou Barlow, one of my alltime, if not my alltime favorite songwriters.
Was the small venue of Il Motore, on Jean-Talon. Intimate place. I would have never found the show if I hadn't been perusing the Horseshoe Tavern shows coming up. Opening was Wye Oak. Both groups have this interesting intimate, romantic and raw relationship.
Lou was/is several key 90's lo-fi bands, true "indie", not the modern marketing term....Sebadoh and Dinosaur Jr.
Lou has a way of just finding the right notes to bury into my heart.
His songs are almost all at core acoustic and melodic. But in concerts and sometimes in recordings they are played almost punkishly. (lover your earphones volume or the feedback might get you).
Paper Girls Most Favorite Song Ever.(period)
From Sebadoh.
(feels oddly revealing)

2 Chefs in Chicago are treating the dining experience almost like a show, you buy tickets not items off a menu. I believe they currently have a cocktail bar and now are opening a restaurant, check out the trailer
"What is Next Restaurant?
Next Restaurant will explore world cuisine. It is being developed by chef Grant Achatz, Nick Kokonas, and the creative team that built Alinea, including Crucial Detail designer Martin Kastner, Architect Steve Rugo, and Interior Designer Tom Stringer.
Next Restaurant will serve four menus per year from great moments in culinary history – or the future. Our team of chefs will investigate, test, refine, and present authentic menu interpretations from cultures, places and times. Depending on the cuisine, meals will be 5 to 6 courses and will include food, beverage pairings, and service.
Our goal each season is to present the best possible menu from each culinary inspiration. We want to take diners on a journey to the foods we find exciting, delicious, and important."
They also work on food pairings at the bar. Here is bubble tea gin and tonic which you might like Jet Set.
