Stay Hungry-Stay Foolish

Google Maxims and Steve Jobs

Ken Auletta from the New Yorker wrote a book about Google, “Googled: The End of the World as We Know It” and before he published it, he cut the last chapter of 25 media maxims. Click the link above to read the chapter, or see below to see them in cribbed form. You might recognize the first maxim from Steve Jobs’ Stanford graduation address.

8. Brand Often Means Trust
9. Every Company is a Frenemy
10. The Speed Of Change Accelerates

interesting quotes thinking about the path that we three are on right now:

"If I had never dropped out, I would have never dropped in on this calligraphy class, and personal computers might not have the wonderful typography that they do. Of course it was impossible to connect the dots looking forward when I was in college. But it was very, very clear looking backwards ten years later.
Again, you can't connect the dots looking forward; you can only connect them looking backwards. So you have to trust that the dots will somehow connect in your future. You have to trust in something — your gut, destiny, life, karma, whatever. This approach has never let me down, and it has made all the difference in my life."

"I'm pretty sure none of this would have happened if I hadn't been fired from Apple. It was awful tasting medicine, but I guess the patient needed it. Sometimes life hits you in the head with a brick. Don't lose faith. I'm convinced that the only thing that kept me going was that I loved what I did. You've got to find what you love. And that is as true for your work as it is for your lovers. Your work is going to fill a large part of your life, and the only way to be truly satisfied is to do what you believe is great work. And the only way to do great work is to love what you do. If you haven't found it yet, keep looking. Don't settle. As with all matters of the heart, you'll know when you find it. And, like any great relationship, it just gets better and better as the years roll on. So keep looking until you find it. Don't settle."

twins twins

want to see double?

From National Geographic Website:

Joseph Mengele, the escaped Nazi war criminal and SS physician, known as the Angel of Death, spent years doing bizarre medical experiments on twins at Auschwitz working to determine if twins held the key to building a blond-haired, blue-eyed master race for Adolf Hitler. Now a historian says he has evidence that Mengele's attempts may not have ended at Auschwitz, and that his obsession to engineer an Aryan master race continued, and that succeeded while he was on the run in South America. Deep in the Brazilian outback in a tiny town among the 80 households in a one-square-mile area are reportedly some 38 pairs of twins. Blond, blue-eyed twins. Bizarre and inexplicable, could they be the product of Mengele's machinations?

December 1st = Officially legal to listen to Christmas music

We've all been waiting, and now the time is here... It's OFFICIALLY THE HOLIDAY SEASON!

1 month of the year, solely dedicated to being Merry and drunk/overfed.

In the UK, there is a certain obsession with the "Christmas #1 Single".

Wikipedia says:
Each year, record companies compete for the number-one single spot on the British charts on or around Christmas Day. Having the UK Christmas number one is very prestigious and leads to a lot of media coverage. Since people are buying gifts for the Christmas period, single sales are extremely high in the week before Christmas, and since the Christmas number one is the single with the highest sales, record companies can make sizeable profit from trying to get their single to Number One. Many members of the public place bets with a bookmaker' on who will be Christmas number one.

It is difficult to pinpoint exactly when the subject of the Christmas number one began to excite significant media coverage. However it seems to date back to 1973, when two of the most successful bands of the day - Slade and Wizzard - both released Christmas-related singles in an attempt to clinch the festive chart-topper, with Slade ultimately coming out on top.

Looking at the #1 list, it's important to note the SPICE GIRLS held #1 for 3 (three!) consecutive years! And who knew Bob the Builder could sing?

New Music Monday

the Fort Knox Five from DC. a combo band playing a mix of funk, hiphop, electronica, reggae, even at time jazz. most definitely influenced from the 60's funk bands.

not a new band, they started in 2003, but have only released one full album in 2008, remixed in 2009: Radio Free DC.

this song is more down tempo, catchy lounge.

apparently you can download the full album for free from their site.

Sagmeister - The power of time off

Very interesting design office run by Stefan Sagmeister. Every 7 years the office clothes for a full year, completely. To redefine itself and the work, get fresh inspiration.

He's got to go!

and if possible ... further than Copenhagen.
i'm thinking maybe mars? he seems to be on the moon already.

you know what its like? Canada is like a date-able girl and Harper is that really annoying guy that keeps asking her out. Worse, she never really says no, so she stays sort-of friends with him ... not because she likes him really but because she knows he likes her. Harper is her safety date.

he's like the persistent type who really sort of annoys you, but not by doing anything in particular, so you'd look like a jerk if you snapped at him. but he just IS annoying! he rarely says the right thing, he's passive aggressive, and most remarkably he doesn't follow his own dreams but follows on the tails of others. And the girls, we never fully reject him and throw him away but always keep a trace of life alive, keep him hoping, just in case we need to use him for those lonely times when we need a date.
urg.

we know its not going anywhere, we don't want to date this guy, its time to de-friend him and move on.

"OTTAWA - Prime Minister Stephen Harper has done an about-face and will attend the Copenhagen climate-change meeting next month.

A spokesman said Harper decided today to attend after the American and Chinese presidents announced that they will show up. The news comes a day after Harper said he would not go to Copenhagen.

The meeting to work on a new climate-change agreement runs Dec. 6-18, but it's not clear when Harper will attend.

Canada has come under strong criticism internationally for reneging on the Kyoto climate protocol and for refusing to sign on to a new deal limiting greenhouse gases unless developing nations are included. "
