RED WALL GALLERY presents
LINEAGE - SOLO SERIES 2010
Artist: Magida El-Kassis
Date: March 5th ? March 16th, 2010
Vernissage: Friday March 5th, 2010, 17:00 - 20:00
Viewing Hours: Monday-Friday, 11:00-18:00, Saturday, 10:00-15:00, Sundays and late evenings by appointment or by chance.
An exhibition of a photographic typology documenting people of "pure bred" ethnicity in order to preserve the lineage and identity of humankind.
El-Kassis explores a personal perspective into the definition of lineage through these images. She envisions these photographs serving as proof for future generations of the existence of pure indigenous ethnic groups. As populations become more integrated, an aspect of identity becomes unrecognizable, so she has begun this typology in order to help preserve the ancestry and identity of humankind.

From the website
About Young Package
Since its foundation in 1996, the Young Package competition has achieved an international reputation and a distinctive position among competitions for young designers. This year brings a couple of significant changes. First, the image of the competition has changed and for its 15th anniversary the competition introduced a brand new web site. Secondly, the scope of the competition adds a novelty: in one of the two categories, it invites and challenges creative minds from art fields other than packaging design.
The competition was founded to invite students and creative people up to 30 years of age, and challenge them to create designs of corrugated and smooth cardboard as used in the sponsor’s packaging design.
Young Package is held annually. Its founder, the Czech company Model Obaly is a leading package manufacturer and a great believer in supporting and challenging young creative talents.

"We're inquisitive: learning from other artists, illustrators, designers, photographers, filmmakers and musicians, whether they're upstarts or icons, famous or shy, verbal or visual.
We're inspired: enchanted by great ideas and strange inventions; by colour and pattern; things fancy and frugal; the charm of vintage in a modern life; the ridiculous and the sublime.
We're adventurous: traveling to destinations both real and imagined, peeking into creative spaces and discovering magnificent people and memorable places.
We're eclectic: curating souvenirs, collecting treasures and celebrating the extraordinary in the everyday.
We're playful: delighting in visual amusements, intelligent distraction, entertaining wordplay and sweet indulgences.
We're UPPERCASE: a magazine for the creative and curious!"

Remembering Alexander McQueen
"Ultimately, McQueen's genius lay in his ability to traverse both the light and the dark and through his clothes express the haunting beauty of both joy and pain."

Flipping through Azure Online, I found a competition for chair design that looks fun with a theme of Minimum/Maximum
One good Chair 2010
"The world of green design is pulled in two directions, for the aim of sustainability has been described alternately as “doing more with less” and “celebrating abundance.” The third annual One Good Chair competition challenges designers to do both.
This year’s theme, “Minimum/Maximum,” embraces the idea that smart design can both preserve natural resources and amplify human delight. We’re not asking you to “balance” or “compromise” these two apparently different aims—we’re pushing you to go as far as you can in both directions at once. Trade-offs are for sissies. How little material can you use to make the most of a chair? How little packaging can you use to reach the most people? Can you design a chair that is almost nothing and almost everything at the same time?"

"A leader is best when people barely know he exists, when his work is done, his aim fulfilled, they will say: we did it ourselves."
"At the center of your being you have the answer; you know who you are and you know what you want."
"Being deeply loved by someone gives you strength, while loving someone deeply gives you courage."
"Great acts are made up of small deeds."
"If you do not change direction, you may end up where you are heading."
"In dwelling, live close to the ground. In thinking, keep to the simple. In conflict, be fair and generous. In governing, don't try to control. In work, do what you enjoy. In family life, be completely present."
"Kindness in words creates confidence. Kindness in thinking creates profoundness. Kindness in giving creates love."
"Life is a series of natural and spontaneous changes. Don't resist them - that only creates sorrow. Let reality be reality. Let things flow naturally forward in whatever way they like."

"Laozi (Chinese: 老子; pinyin: Lǎozǐ; Wade-Giles: Laosi; also Lao Tse, Lao Tu, Lao-Tzu, Lao-Tsu, Laotze, Lao Zi, Laocius, and other variations) was a philosopher of ancient China and is a central figure in Taoism (also spelled "Daoism"). Laozi literally means "Old Master" and is generally considered an honorific. Laozi is revered as a deity in most religious forms of Taoism. Taishang Laojun is a title for Laozi in the Taoist religion, which refers to him as "One of the Three Pure Ones".
According to Chinese tradition, Laozi lived in the 6th century BC. Historians variously contend that Laozi is a synthesis of multiple historical figures, that he is a mythical figure, or that he actually lived in the 4th century BC, concurrent with the Hundred Schools of Thought and Warring States Period.[1]
A central figure in Chinese culture, both nobility and common people claim Laozi in their lineage. Throughout history, Laozi's work was embraced by various anti-authoritarian movements."

Dangerous games?

Every winter’s day, or so it seemed, brought a fresh report of an Olympic medal hopeful knocked out of contention for the Vancouver Games. From skiers to bobsledders, snowboarders to skaters, a startling number of athletes became part of an agony-of-defeat montage of injuries
On paper, a pretty good Winter Olympics could be held with all the athletes who are too hurt to make this year’s Games. On television, the drama has never been higher. Even among those who have navigated the slippery slopes, their bodies and Olympic hopes relatively intact, a heightened sense of danger has found an unexpected home in the back of the mind.
The most telling admission, perhaps, came last month at the bottom of the halfpipe in Park City, Utah, a few weeks after the snowboarder Kevin Pearce was airlifted from there after sustaining a traumatic brain injury while working on the double cork, the event’s latest daredevil stunt.

"Broadening Makeup’s Spectrum"
"NOT every woman has the confidence to paint her lips a metallic cornflower blue, even if Doo.Ri’s models walked the runway with Everest-cold pouts during the last New York Fashion Week. But some of the unusual colors that professional makeup artists routinely use to create an unforgettable eye or lip don’t have women running scared anymore.
We are seeing a lot of experimental techniques and colors going on in fashion for sure,” said Gordon Espinet, the vice president of makeup artistry for M.A.C. Cosmetics. “Everybody is sick of the idea of being safe all the time, and being predictable. In the real world, it’s happening as well. A lot of women are taking chances.”"

We got to give big thanks to Vanity Fair this week for this amazing shot...
I love Julianne Moore (she is magnificient in A Single Man) but when you get to see a picture with BOTH Colin Firth and Tom Ford toguether... I mean... Let's be realistic here, the boys are the eye candy.
If only Matthew Goode was in there... I think i could die tommorrow, happy... ;)
On an Oscar note; I truly hope Mr Firth wins in best actor category... he is SUBLIME in the role of George Falconer.

I didn't realise that the fashion houses were doing short film type ads.
Prada just came out with its film at the end of jan, chanel and dior were last year.
The jury is still out for me on them, not sure...
The cinematography is beautiful on all three, but there isn't much else. Direction...meh, story... very meh, acting... well Marion and Audrey don't have much to work with. The men, especially prada boys are too modelish, would have been better with actors, actors with screen presence. Chanels is short enough to feel like an interesting ad rather than a short film and therefore seems more successful. The other two are too literal, like our first versions of the moodbox! lol...

new exhibit at the Guggenheim
"Tino Sehgal (b. 1976, London) constructs situations that defy the traditional context of museum and gallery environments, focusing on the fleeting gestures and social subtleties of lived experience rather than on material objects. Relying exclusively on the human voice, bodily movement, and social interaction, Sehgal’s works nevertheless fulfill all the parameters of a traditional artwork with the exception of its inanimate materiality. They are presented continuously during the operating hours of the museum, they can be bought and sold, and, by virtue of being repeatable, they can persist over time."

v. good to know!
"Clothing and textiles derived from bamboo must be labelled as rayon or viscose to counter a widely held but mistaken perception that the fabric is environmentally friendly, the Competition Bureau has ruled.
The bureau announced last week that labels and advertising have been corrected on 450,000 textile items, as well as on 250 websites that sell clothing and textile products.
The changes came after an investigation in the U.S. and Canada found that rayon derived from bamboo was no more natural or environmentally friendly than rayon derived from oak and beech trees."

"The doorman at The Carlyle doesn't know who Charlotte Gainsbourg is. Told she's in movies, he only nods: "We get a lot of those." But this one is half French and wholly Parisian, willowy and whispery and smoky - no? And when she's not an actor, she's a singer - a chanteuse -and longtime muse for Balenciaga. The poor man still hasn't the faintest idea, but now he's curious. I say, finally: "She looks like a deer? In very high heels?" Now a spark alights in the doorman's eyes. He says: "Her? I thought she was a ballerina."
