Everything is about the bar these days.
Popcicle bar in NYC
"Hot town, summer in the city, and the perfect antidote for sweltering temperatures has just moved in to New York's West Village. The eye-catching and delicious popsicles of Carmine Street's latest arrival Popbar, are the new old shape of sweet treat refreshment. Served on a stick, Popbar's all-natural gelato, sorbetto and frozen yoghurt add an artisan twist to the classic popsicle - or for some, ice lolly"

I don't know if you ever read it but it was a really good teen mag. I confess I sometimes bought 17 and YM too. But Sassy was always a bit more girl power/music/politics etc oriented.
As Kottke pointed out, there really isn't an equivalent these days.
"Sassy's founding editor was Jane Pratt, and it had a half Australian, half American staff. Its original main writers were referred to by Pratt as "Sex" (Karen Catchpole), "Drugs" (Catherine Gysin), and "Rock 'n Roll" (Christina Kelly)[1] because of the topics they covered. The fashion department was headed by Mary Clarke and Andrea Lee Linett, and one of their discoveries was Chloë Sevigny, whom they spotted on the street and hired as an intern. The Australian half of the staff covered the art & design (Neil McCutcheon) and beauty departments."

If so, go to Swizerland!
The Swiss Tourist Board hopes scenes of bare-chested hunks tossing hay in mountain valleys will entice women dreading a summer of World Cup boredom.
While husbands are glued to television sets, Switzerland has a whole lot more to offer, suggests the TV advert.

Check this product out:

From the website:
Oryzatech’s STAK BLOCK is a simple building solution for a sophisticated housing problem. The company has created a hybrid composite building block from the largest bio-waste crop in the world, rice straw. Through a scalable, low energy-production process, the company can make and sell an almost unlimited supply of highly insulating, carbon-sequestering construction blocks.

It's been almost a week without Paper Girl leaving her trail of fabulous links on the blog! :)
Here are a few random links I did not have a chance to post do to my eminent move to the big TO!
I came upon this site, based in the UK: Pink Stinks - Campaign for real role models
"Pinkstinks is a campaign and social enterprise that challenges the culture of pink which invades every aspect of girls' lives.
This site is for parents and non parents alike, and aims to gather support, promote discussion and ultimately to mobilize that support to influence marketeers and the media about the importance of promoting positive gender roles to girls."

I always enjoy his books. The new one is about the "mysteries of the home".
Article at the Guardian.
"Eating forks were thought comically dainty and unmanly – and dangerous, too, come to that. Since they had only two sharp tines, the scope for spearing one's lip or tongue was great, particularly if one's aim was impaired by wine and jollity. Manufacturers experimented with additional numbers of tines – sometimes as many as six – before settling, late in the 19th century, on four as the number with which people seemed most comfortable. Why four should induce the optimum sense of security isn't easy to say, but it does seem to be a fundamental fact of flatware psychology."

Belljar café
2072 Dundas Street West (Roncesvalles area)

I'm not sure whether its the construction or the fact that it was found with google earth thats more interesting.
anyway, here is it, located in Canada of course..
via Kottke
"THE LONGEST BEAVER DAM IN THE WORLD
The longest beaver dam found with Google Earth to date (October 2 2007) is located in Northern Alberta. The dam has a length of about 850 meters (2790 ft). It has at least existed at this spot for over 15 years as it can be observed on the 1990 LandSat 7 Pseudo Color Imagery Provided by NASA World Wind. However 1975 aerial photo's show that this dam did not exist in 1975.
The actual location of the world longest beaver dam (that is until someone find a longer one) is just south of Lake Claire, and about 190 km to the NNE of Fort McMurray, just inside Wood Buffalo National Park. "

Good design?

"MILAN — What is good design? Something that does the job well? That looks and feels good? That’s environmentally and ethically responsible? That does something new with technology? That enables us to do something we couldn’t do before, or to do it better?
Good design does any or all of those things, and more. But it needn’t necessarily do them noisily or conspicuously. Some of the most inspiring design projects are so gentle and subtle that they go unnoticed. They are what I call “quietly good design” and, despite their modesty, our lives are the better for them. Here are some examples that I’ve come across recently. "
